Richard Henry (Peter) Sellers (Southsea (Hampshire), 8 september 1925 - Londen, 24 juli 1980) was een Brits acteur en komiek, die voornamelijk bekend is geworden als Inspector Clouseau in Blake Edwards' Pink Panther-films.

Levensloop

Sellers stamt uit een Engelse familie van acteurs, zowel zijn vader als zijn moeder speelden in een gezelschap dat werd geleid door zijn grootmoeder. Van moeders zijde is hij van Joodse komaf. Sellers werd verwend, omdat zijn ouders eerder een doodgeboren kind hadden.

Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, waarin Sellers diende bij de RAF, was hij een tijd actief in muziek, met Spike Milligan en Harry Secombe. Met deze twee verzorgde hij een decennium lang bijna wekelijks bij de BBC het absurdistische radioprogramma The Goon Show, dat mateloos populair werd. Hij zong later onder andere een duet met Sophia Loren dat in Engeland de vierde plaats in de hitlijst bereikte. Solo bereikte hij de hitlijsten met een cover van A Hard Day's Night van The Beatles.

Begin jaren 50 speelde hij kleine rollen in diverse films. Zijn eerste succes was in 1959 met zijn rol als vakbondsman in I'm All Right Jack. In de jaren 60 vierde Sellers zijn grootste successen, met The Pink Panther, maar ook Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (waarvoor hij zijn eerste Oscarnominatie kreeg maar hem niet won), What's New, Pussycat en Casino Royale. In 1975 tot 1978 zouden nog drie vervolgfilms in de serie Pink Panther worden gemaakt.

In 1979 speelde Sellers de hoofdrol in Being There. Nadat Sellers het boek waarop die film gebaseerd is las, had hij er alles voor over om die film te maken. Het leverde hem z'n tweede Oscarnominatie op. Wederom won hij hem niet: de Oscar ging dat jaar naar Dustin Hoffman voor zijn rol in Kramer vs. Kramer. Sellers laatste film, The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu kwam kort na zijn dood in 1980 uit en flopte. Blake Edwards zou na Sellers' dood nog één Pink Panther film uitbrengen: Trail of the Pink Panther, gemaakt met overgebleven materiaal uit de vorige films.

Sellers was vier maal getrouwd, met Anne Howe, Britt Ekland, Miranda Quarry en Lynne Frederick. Van die laatste wou hij ironisch genoeg op de dag van overlijden gaan scheiden.

Sellers was vegetariër
Hij weigerde de hoofdrol in Blake Edwards' 10, waarop Dudley Moore die zou spelen
Sellers stond als eerste man op de omslag van Playboy, in het aprilnummer van 1964
Hoewel Sellers veel succes en bekendheid kreeg met de Pink Panther-films vond hij zelf de jaren tijdens The Goon Show de mooiste periode uit zijn leven.
