  • Biography

Sleek lines and seductive surfaces characterize the work of Australian born industrial designer Marc Newson. After studying jewelry and sculpture at Sydney College of the Arts Newson moved to Tokyo where he designed his first major pieces for Idée. Subsequently based in Paris and London, where he lives and works, Newson quickly became one of the world’s most accomplished and influential designers. His work is present in most major permanent museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, London’s Design Museum, Centre Georges Pompidou, and the Vitra Design Museum. He has designed for or been engaged with companies like Ikepod, Qantas, Apple, Hermés, Heineken, Nike, Smeg, Tefal, Pentax, and Shiseido.

Marc Newson works across a wide range of disciplines, creating everything from furniture and household objects to bicycles and cars, aircraft, yachts, boutiques, restaurants, various architectural commissions, and signature sculptural pieces for clients across the globe. He has designed for the industries of manufacturing and technology, transportation, fashion, and the luxury goods sector. It is perhaps his furniture which is most well known and which continues to reach astounding prices at auction houses, like one of his three Lockheed Lounge chairs, which sold for $ 968,000 at Sotheby’s. Across all mediums his distinctive style can be read; smooth geometric lines, translucency, strength, transparency and an absence of sharp edges.
